Slain San Clemente Woman’s Boyfriend Surrenders, Is Jailed
A man sought for questioning in the slaying of his girlfriend was arrested on suspicion of murder Thursday after he surrendered to authorities.
Maynard Hatleberg, 47, turned himself in to the Orange County sheriff’s substation in San Clemente about 5:30 a.m., officials said. They said investigators questioned him for several hours before he was arrested. Hatleberg is being held at Orange County Jail on $1 million bail.
Deborah Williams, 49, was found dead in her San Clemente condo in the 1000 block of Calle del Cerro on Tuesday after her concerned daughter called a locksmith to open the door.
Authorities said Williams, who was found in her bed, had been dead since Saturday. She died of wounds to the neck and throat, said sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino.
Investigators said Hatleberg, who had lived with Williams, disappeared with her 1997 Toyota Camry and her dog, Chloe.
Neighbors said they heard Williams scream Saturday night but didn’t call police because the couple often argued. They were in the midst of breaking up, acquaintances said.
Hatleberg was driving the Toyota when he surrendered to authorities Thursday. The dog, however, is missing.
Hatleberg is scheduled to be arraigned today at Orange County Superior Court in Laguna Niguel.
