Cincinnati to Reinstate Huggins in August

Cincinnati basketball Coach Bob Huggins will be reinstated Aug. 27 following his suspension for a drunk-driving conviction.

“We are satisfied that Coach Huggins has taken appropriate steps while under suspension,” Athletic Director Bob Goin said at a news conference Thursday.

Huggins, 50, was put on paid suspension June 12, after his arrest. He pleaded no contest, was fined $350 and given a suspended six-month jail sentence that required him to attend a three-day education course.

A judge in Waco, Texas, delayed next month’s murder trial of former Baylor University basketball player Carlton Dotson until Oct. 11 because of the defense’s request for more time to evaluate Dotson. He is charged with killing ex-teammate Patrick Dennehy last year.

Second-seeded Lindsay Davenport beat qualifier Lioudmila Skavronskaia, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round of the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford.

After completing a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over qualifier Hugo Armando, French Open champion Gaston Gaudio beat Tomas Berdych, 6-2, 6-4, to reach the Mercedes Cup quarterfinals in Stuttgart, Germany. Jiri Novak beat 2002 champion Mikhail Youzhny, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1.

Defending champion Nicolas Massu beat Raemon Sluiter, 6-4, 7-6 (4), in the second round of the Dutch Open in Amersfoort, Netherlands.

Hockey

Restricted free-agent forward Rico Fata agreed to a multiyear contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.... The Florida Panthers signed free-agent defenseman Sean Hill to a two-year contract.... The St. Louis Blues signed newly acquired goalie Patrick Lalime and forward Jamal Mayers to one-year contracts, avoiding arbitration for both.... The Edmonton Oilers re-signed forward Jani Rita to a one-year contract and forward Brad Isbister to a two-year deal.... The Chicago Blackhawks re-signed free-agent forwards Eric Daze and Kyle Calder.... Free-agent forward Krzysztof Oliwa signed a contract that will bring him back to the New Jersey Devils. Oliwa spent last season with Calgary.

President Bush named his father, former President George H.W. Bush, to lead the U.S. delegation to the Olympic Games in Athens. Also representing the U.S. government at the Games will be the president’s mother, Barbara; his twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara; tennis star Chris Evert; the U.S. ambassador to Greece, Thomas Miller; San Diego Charger owner Alex Spanos; and Spanos’ wife, Faye.

Neil Papiano, the attorney for suspended jockey Patrick Valenzuela, is scheduled to be in Los Angeles Superior Court this morning seeking a stay so Valenzuela can ride pending a formal hearing.

James Ahern, a deputy attorney general for the state of California, will oppose the stay on behalf of the California Horse Racing Board.

Valenzuela was suspended July 2 by the Hollywood Park stewards because he reportedly was unable to provide a sufficient hair sample to be tested for drugs.

Two days after winning the Golden Spikes Award as the nation’s top amateur player, Long Beach State right-hander Jered Weaver capped a sweep of college baseball’s major awards by being selected the winner of the inaugural Roger Clemens Award given to the top pitcher.

Long Beach Poly receiver Desean Jackson and former Ventura St. Bonaventure cornerback Terrail Lambert, along with former Compton Dominguez track star Lionel Larry will be part of an event to see who is the fastest athlete in Los Angeles in the Day of Speed competition tonight at USC.

La Puente junior lightweight Mike Anchondo, 22, won his first world title at Dallas’ American Airlines Arena with a unanimous decision over Julio Pablo Chacon, all three judges scoring the bout, 119-108.

During the fight for the World Boxing Organization’s vacant 130-pound title, Anchondo, who improved to 25-0, dropped Chacon (50-6) with a left hook to the head in the 12th round.

Passings

Former PGA Tour player Jeff Julian died in Norwich, Vt., nearly three years after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 42.
