Capriati Out of Carlsbad Event

Jennifer Capriati, who pulled out of this week’s JPMorgan Chase Open because of a right-hamstring injury, withdrew Friday from the $1.3-million Acura Classic next week in Carlsbad for the same reason.

Capriati, No. 7 in the WTA entry-system rankings, enjoyed some of the most memorable early performances of her career in the Acura tournament, which runs Sunday through Aug. 1 at La Costa Resort and Spa.

Capriati won the tournament in 1991 with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory over Monica Seles, then the world’s top-ranked player, and she beat Conchita Martinez in two sets to win the title again in 1992.

Also missing because of injury will be top-ranked Justine Henin-Hardenne and No. 2 Kim Clijsters.

Lina Krasnoroutskaya, one of a large group of Russians expected to compete, pulled out of the tournament Friday because of visa problems.

The draw still includes seven of the top 10 players in the world, including Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, Amelie Mauresmo, Anastasia Myskina, Lindsay Davenport and Elena Dementieva. Venus and Serena Williams also are scheduled to play.
