Frankel’s Chances Doubled

Share

There are two turf races on the card today at Del Mar, and trainer Bobby Frankel could have the winner in both.

In the fourth, a $58,000 optional claimer for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles, Sagitta Ra will be a solid favorite to win for the second time. In the seventh, a $58,000 allowance at one mile, the well-regarded Royal Stamp will make his U.S. debut. Both races are part of a pick six with a carry-over of $138,781.

Owned by Frankel, Sagitta Ra, a daughter of Run Softly, hasn’t been worse than third in her three starts, including a third in the Honeymoon Breeders’ Cup Handicap in her graded stakes debut June 5. Corey Nakatani, who rode Sagitta Ra for the first time in the Honeymoon, has the call again today.

Bred and owned by Juddmonte Farms, Royal Stamp, a 5-year-old With Approval horse, will be making his first start since July 21, 2003, and only the fifth of his career.

Scheduled to race with Lasix for the first time, Royal Stamp will be ridden today by David Flores.

Race of the day: Lunarpal, who has won all four of his starts for owner Bill Heiligbrodt and trainer Steve Asmussen, heads a field of 11 2-year-olds in the $150,000 Sanford at Saratoga.

One for the road: Source is a big fan of Saratoga -- three wins in four starts -- and was re-claimed by Asmussen out of his last start on July 2 in Kentucky. Shane Sellers will ride the 6-year-old Montbrook horse in the ninth, a $20,000 claimer at seven furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick all using Minnie The Moocher in the first, Sunny Outcome in the second, Aggressive, Bourbon Party and Memo To Russ in the third, Sagitta Ra in the fourth, Capers Town in the fifth, Sunrise Event and Crash McGoon in the sixth, Royal Stamp and Montana Deputy in the seventh and Strut Your Stuff and Wicca Day in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/15. Money: Previous day/meet total: $4.60/$81. Total money bet: $120.
