Soccer Stars to Display Their Talents in Carson

Forward Richard Flores of Inglewood Animo Leadership and midfielders Diego Barrera of Thousand Oaks and Maurice Edu of Etiwanda have been selected to play for the West team in the third McDonald’s high school All-American boys’ soccer game at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

Defender Greg Folk of Woodland Hills and midfielder Christian Jimenez of San Dimas, who attend the Edison Academic Center in Bradenton, Fla., while training with the U.S. under-17 national team, will also represent the West squad in the game that will showcase 36 of the nation’s top senior players.

Midfielder Brittany Klein of Arcadia will play in the girls’ game at 2 p.m. She was selected as The Times’ girls’ player of the year after tallying 30 goals and 28 assists last season.

Admission is free.

Folk, Jimenez and Klein are also among the four girls and five boys from the Southland recently selected Parade magazine All-Americans.

Folk and Jimenez are joined by goalkeeper Chris Seitz of San Luis Obispo, a junior who was also named Gatorade player of the year for California, forward Robbie Rogers from Rolling Hills Estates and midfielder Anthony Beltran from Claremont on the magazine’s 26th boys’ team.

Klein is joined by two Times’ All-Stars -- defender Kasey Moore, a junior from Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, and forward Amy Rodriguez, a junior from Santa Margarita -- on the magazine’s 12th girls’ team.

Also on the team is Alexa Orand, a sophomore who has never played for her team at Orange El Modena but is a member of the U.S. under-19 women’s national team.

Chet Sanders, who had eight interceptions in helping Carson win the City Section championship, is expected to play in the fourth Gridiron War All-Star game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. The game features seniors from the City against their counterparts from the Southern Section.

Sanders, a Times’ All-Star at defensive back who will play for Washington in the fall, will be joined in the game by seven all-regional players: Dereik Driscoll, running back, Lakewood Mayfair; Noris Malele, lineman, Carson; Michael Bumpus, wide receiver, Culver City; Jasper Henry and Eric Faatogi, linemen, L.A. Dorsey; Marlin Simmons, linebacker, Lynwood, and Deamas Fleming, wide receiver, Long Beach Jordan.

Carson has named Rowen Tupuivao, a former Colt linebacker who has coached at the junior college level, as its new coach, replacing John Aguirre, who resigned.
