Long Beach State pitcher Jered Weaver was selected as Baseball America’s college player of the year, and Cal State Fullerton catcher Kurt Suzuki was named to the first team by the North Carolina-based publication.

Weaver, who was the Angels’ first-round pick in the draft earlier this month, went 15-1 with a 1.62 earned-run average and walked only 21 batters in 144 innings. The 6-foot-7 junior right-hander recorded 213 strikeouts, the sixth-highest total in Division I history.

Suzuki, whose Titans are playing South Carolina on Saturday in the College World Series, is batting .437 with 16 home runs and 86 runs batted in. Fullerton senior pitcher Jason Windsor, who is 11-4 with a 1.84 ERA, was a second-team selection.
