Poor Shooting Sinks Cal
Tre Simmons scored 16 points to lead Washington to a 76-58 home victory over California on Thursday night.
Despite shooting 26% in the first half, the Huskies (16-10, 11-6 Pac-10) managed to salvage a critical win in their quest to reach a postseason tournament. It helped that the Bears shot 25% over the first 20 minutes and 34.5% for the game.
Although California (13-13, 9-8 Pac-10) improved its shooting in the second half, it wasn’t enough.
The Huskies outscored the Bears 19-11 in the first seven minutes of the second half to take control. Simmons’ 12-foot jumper in the key put the Huskies ahead 47-31 with 13:03 to play.
Washington shot 38.6% for the game.
Washington has won 11 of its last 12 conference games, after opening its Pac-10 schedule with five consecutive losses.
Four other Huskies scored in double digits: Bobby Jones had 13, Brandon Roy and Mike Jensen 12 apiece and Will Conroy 11.
