A Field of 14 in Kilroe Mile

Share

The $350,000 Kilroe Mile is the most unpredictable of the three stakes races on today’s card at Santa Anita.

Fourteen horses are scheduled to run in the Kilroe, which means the winner will be the one that gets the best trip and is able to avoid trouble.

The most accomplished member of the large cast is Sarafan. The 7-year-old Lear Fan gelding has banked $2,390,271, and none of the remaining 13 are even close to $1 million in earnings.

Sarafan has won nine of 36. He is winless, however, on the Santa Anita turf course.

The race is part of a pick six with a guaranteed pool of $1 million.

The other main contenders are Irish Warrior, Inesperado, Buckland Manor, who is back on the turf after finishing third in the Strub Stakes last month; Singletary; improving longshot Wixoe Express; Designed For Luck, Golden Dragon and Sweet Return.

Race of the day: Ashado, who won four of six as a 2-year-old, will take on Victory U.S.A. and four others in the $300,000 Fair Grounds Oaks at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans. Trained by Todd Pletcher for a partnership, Ashado, a daughter of Saint Ballado, will break from the rail and will be ridden by Cornelio Velasquez.

One for the road: Loving has found a home on the inner track at Aqueduct and can make it three wins in a row for leading trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. in today’s eighth, the $75,000 Stymie Handicap at 1 1/8 miles. Jose Espinoza will ride the 8-year-old gelding.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Beau Soleil in the eighth, Buckland Manor, Inesperado, Irish Warrior, Singletary and Wixoe Express in the ninth, Southern Image and Star Cross in the 10th and Boomzeeboom, Eastern Point and Rocket Launcher in the 11th.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 3/155. Money: Previous day/meet total: $12.60/$823.40. Total money bet: $888.
