2002 Fairview Estate Goat-Roti
Charles Back of Fairview Estate in South Africa has a flock of 600 goats on his property, so when it came to naming this Rhone-style blend, he went with Goat-Roti, which is, of course, a tongue-in-cheek play on the famous northern Rhone Syrah, Cote-Rotie. The French aren’t happy about it, but I doubt very much anybody is going to mistake the two. This blend of Syrah-Shiraz with a little Viognier has a character all its own. Inky and dense, it packs a wallop of fruit and spice while steering clear of any jamminess. Aged in French oak, it’s juicy and delicious -- and much more of a wine than the price would suggest. A fine candidate for house wine.
