Upsets Create a Carry-Over

Share

Thanks to upsets Sunday by Pico Central in the San Carlos and Boss Nass in a maiden race where Storm Pilot was the 3-10 favorite, there is a pick six carry-over of $219,649 at Santa Anita.

Stormica, who will take on seven other fillies and mares in the sixth race, a $52,000 optional claimer at seven furlongs, will draw some attention from pick-six players as a possible single.

Trained by Gary Mandella, the 4-year-old daughter of Storm Cat was an impressive winner in her U.S. and main track debut Jan. 30.

Out of Lovlier Linda, a multiple stakes winner locally many years ago, Stormica figured to enjoy the dirt after winning one of six starts on the turf in France.

Ridden by Alex Solis, who will be aboard again today, she rallied from well off the pace and won by a length. She figures to get a hot pace to chase again and the extra distance will suit her.

The other pick-six races are a mile turf race for maidens, a starter allowance for 3-year-old fillies, a 6 1/2 furlong turf contest for older fillies and mares, a 1 1/8-mile race on grass for older California breds, and a $25,000 maiden claimer.

Race of the day: Strong Hope, the winner of the Dwyer and Jim Dandy last year, will make his first start since he finished a distant third in the Travers on Aug. 23 in today’s eighth, a $46,000 optional claimer at six furlongs, at Gulfstream Park.

One for the road: Beaudazzler is on top of his game and steps up in class in search of his third consecutive victory in today’s eighth at Golden Gate Fields.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Red Opal, Brocky’s Dream and Our Fling in the fifth, Stormica in the sixth, Skywalker Red, Legal Logic, Logician and Burst Your Bubble in the seventh and Sitkasam and Gross Margin in the eighth.
