Masters champion, Five Counties runner-up and was third at state, losing to champ Joe Cisneros of Bakersfield, 7-6, in semifinals. 112 Brian Moreno, Foothill Jr. Two-time state champion took first at every one of his California tournaments, including Masters and Five Counties. 119 Bryan Osuna, S.A. Calvary Chapel Jr. Finished sixth at state, fourth at Masters, second at the Inland Division individual finals and third at Five Counties. 125 Teddy Astorga, Perris Sr. A three-time state qualifier, Astorga finally placed this year, taking fourth at Bakersfield. Was first at Masters and at the Inland Division individual finals. 130 Gabe Aguilar, Mater Dei Jr. Didn’t place at state but won more matches at finals than any other Southland wrestler at his weight. Third at Masters and Coastal Division finals. 135 Patrick Aleksanyan, S.A. Calvary Chapel Sr. Stormed to second at state after he finished sixth at Masters. Inland Division champ was third at Five Counties. 140 David Juaregui, S.A. Calvary Chapel Sr. Finished 45-1 with 32 technical falls after a 13-12 loss in the state finals. Won every other tournament, including Masters and Five Counties. 145 David Acosta, North Torrance Sr. Masters and Central Division champion was fourth at state and Five Counties. 152 Sam McGeorge, Northview Sr. Masters and Southern Division champion was third at state and Five Counties. 160 Calvin Devault, Temecula Valley Sr. State champion beat Yucca Valley’s Brian Merrit in overtime in final after losing in Masters final to Merrit in overtime. Won Coastal Division title and was Five Counties runner-up. 171 Jimmy Stormo, San Jacinto Jr. Took fifth at state, and was first at Masters. Took third at Northern Division Individual finals at Canyon Springs. 189 Mitch Monteiro, Paso Robles So. Placed third in state and at Masters, and took first and was named MVW at the Northern Division finals at Canyon Springs. 215 Kody Nielsen, Ventura Sr. Placed eighth in state, first at Masters, first at Southern Division Individual finals, and seventh at Five Counties. 275 Alex Mack, Santa Barbara San Marcos Sr. Southern Division and Masters champion was second at state and Five Counties. Was MVP at Masters. Coach of the year: David Ochoa, Northview With only two seniors, guided team to a 20-0 dual-meet record and first place at Masters, qualifying the most to state of any Southland team with seven. I Three state placers, including champion Calvin Devault (160). 3 NORTHVIEW SS-Div. III Youthful Vikings had two place third at state. 4 AYALA SS-Div. I Had best postseason in school history with three going to state. 5 ATASCADERO SS-Div. I Greyhounds place only Glenn Rhees at state but still have depth. 6 YUCCA VALLEY SS-Div. III Trojans finish strong with Brian Merritt taking second at state. 7 LAGUNA HILLS SS-Div. I Cliff Jarmie a legitimate candidate for coach of the year. 8 N. TORRANCE SS-Div. II David Acosta is lone state placer for the Saxons. 9 ROSEMEAD SS-Div. II Had disappointing postseason but has youth on its side. 10 SANTA ANA SS-Div. I Didn’t have anybody place at state but still has good depth.
