Fatal Attack Is Gang-Related, Police Say

A recent fatal attack in Garden Grove that left one man dead and a second injured may be in retaliation for an earlier incident in which a gunman opened fire on a crowd outside a cafe, police said Wednesday.

The shootings appear to be the work of rival gangs, but there is no evidence that a gang war has broken out, said Garden Grove Police Lt. Mike Handfield.per reporter

Nhan Chuong, 24, of Santa Ana was killed in a shooting late Friday while driving on Cosby Avenue when someone fired a blast in the driver’s side window, police said. The bullet struck his skull, then lodged in his passenger’s head, police said.

“We don’t know if the car pulled up or someone walked up, but it was a close shot range,” Handfield said.

When police arrived, the car was idling in the street. The passenger was found slumped in the doorway of a nearby home. He was treated at a hospital and released this week, Handfield said.

Police said the shooting was in retaliation to a rival gang that had opened fire about six hours earlier on a crowd outside a Garden Grove cafe.

In that incident, a man fired shots at people in front of Hien Cafe on McFadden Avenue after an argument and peppered two parked cars with gunfire.

Three people received minor injuries.

Detectives later arrested Thanh Phuoc Dinh, 22, of Westminster, who is suspected of being the shooter in the cafe incident.

He is being held at Orange County Jail in lieu of $250,000.
