A remorseful 23-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to jail time, probation and community service for causing a high-speed crash that killed an elderly man last summer in Granada Hills.

Vahan Shahenian of Granada Hills was ordered by San Fernando Superior Court Judge Charles Peven to spend 25 days in a city jail and four years on supervised probation. He also must perform 400 hours of community service.

Shahenian must make restitution to the victim’s family and attend a MADD-sponsored victim impact program, although he was sober at the time of the accident, Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Lori Dery said. His driver’s license was suspended for three years.

Earlier this month, Shahenian pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. After seeing the auto racing film “2 Fast 2 Furious,” Shahenian drove about 80 mph on Rinaldi Street and hit a car driven by 78-year-old Keiji Iko of Granada Hills, who died instantly, Dery said.
