Santa Ana police said they shot and wounded a 36-year-old man after he tried to assault them Sunday morning.

Police said they were called to the 2500 block of West Harvard Street about 7:30 a.m. when residents complained that a man in the neighborhood was acting suspiciously and yelling at passersby, said Sgt. Carlos Rojas, a police spokesman.

When two officers arrived, they were attacked by Antonio Chagolla, 36, of Santa Ana, Rojas said. Chagolla did not have a gun but did have a deadly weapon, though Rojas declined to elaborate.

Police fired, hitting Chagolla numerous times. He fled into a nearby backyard but was soon arrested. Chagolla was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange for treatment of wounds not considered life-threatening and will be booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon when he recovers, Rojas said.

Police were trying to find out what brought Chagolla to the neighborhood. His car was parked in a driveway and had caught fire, for a reason police were still trying to determine.

An 11-year-old boy who lives next door to the shooting scene said he heard loud bangs, went outside, saw the car on fire and saw four officers and the suspect, who was bleeding from an arm.

The case was being investigated by the district attorney’s office and by the Police Department’s internal affairs unit.
