An arrest warrant has been issued for a 22-year-old Oxnard man in connection with the fatal shooting of another local man, whose body was found last month on a Ventura County roadside.

Sheriff’s investigators are looking for Rudolfo Negrete following the April 17 death of Daniel Campos, 21, of Oxnard, authorities said. Negrete was described as 6 feet tall and 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Sheriff’s Department spokesman Eric Nishimoto said Negrete had no known affiliation with gangs, but had been arrested in the past in connection with several minor traffic violations and on suspicion of possession of marijuana.

The victim’s body was discovered by a motorist in the 3400 block of Hailes Road, in an unincorporated area of the county west of Oxnard. He had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Campos also had no known gang ties. No motive was given.

“He was a nice kid. He lived at home with his parents and worked full time,” Nishimoto said of Campos. “From everything we’ve found so far, he was just an unfortunate victim.”

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact investigators at 477-7001.

Ventura County Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this homicide. Callers may remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers is at 385-8255 or 494-8255.
