Cincinnati Has Formula for Rout

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Gino Guidugli threw three of his school-record five touchdown passes to Hannibal Thomas on Saturday to lead Cincinnati to a 52-24 rout of No. 21 Southern Mississippi at Hattiesburg, Miss.

Guidugli completed 19 of 26 passes for 308 yards for Cincinnati, which is to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in Conference USA and ended the Golden Eagles’ 13-game league winning streak and beat a ranked team for the first time in four years.

His 80-yard touchdown pass to Thomas -- the Bearcats’ longest completion in nearly a decade -- on the second play of the second half broke the game open. The two also connected on touchdown passes covering 15 and 47 yards, and Thomas finished with 168 yards in seven catches.

Cincinnati never trailed, turned three turnovers into 17 points and won its third straight since an embarrassing turnover-filled loss at Army that ended the Black Knights’ 19-game losing streak.
