San Jose State Has Its Way, 70-63

In the highest-scoring regulation game in Division I-A history, Brian Nunez returned an interception 28 yards with 2:18 left for the last of 19 touchdowns and San Jose State beat Rice, 70-63, on Saturday at San Jose.

The Spartans, 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference, got 28 points and two key interceptions in the fourth quarter of an astonishing exhibition of big-play offense.

The 133 points surpassed the total from Middle Tennessee State’s 70-58 victory over Idaho on Oct. 6, 2001.

Rice and San Jose State combined for 1,089 yards of total offense, with the Owls (2-2, 1-1) running 100 plays for 634 yards -- including 570 in 85 rushing plays.

Bruce Gradkowski tied his school record with six touchdown passes and had 455 yards to lead Toledo (3-2, 2-0) to a 52-14 victory over Ball State (1-4, 1-1) in a MAC game at Toledo, Ohio.... Cedric Hampton’s eight-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter helped Alabama Birmingham (3-1, 2-0) to a 30-27 victory over host Cincinnati (2-3, 1-1) in a Conference USA game.

SOUTH

Eric Shelton ran for 129 yards and tied a school record with five rushing touchdowns to lead No. 22 Louisville (4-0, 2-0) to a 59-7 win over East Carolina (0-4, 0-1) in a Conference USA game at Louisville, Ky.... DeAngelo Williams rushed for a school-record 262 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Memphis (4-1, 1-1) to a 41-14 victory over Houston (1-4, 1-1) in a Conference USA game at Memphis, Tenn....
