Don’t Feed the Birds

I am very disappointed that The Times published the picture of the woman feeding the birds at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park (Oct. 2). It looks like a very innocent pastime, but the feeding of birds at this location contributes to botulism outbreaks. Uneaten bread falls to the bottom of the lake, where it rots. During the summer of 2002, hundreds of birds died from botulism.

The area is posted that people should not be feeding the birds, but evidently this woman chose to ignore the signs.
