Eruption Less Likely as Mt. St. Helens Alert Dips

Scientists dropped the alert level for Mt. St. Helens, saying earthquake activity had fallen to the lowest level since before the restless volcano started venting steam last week.

“We no longer think that an eruption is imminent in the sense of minutes or hours,” said Willie Scott, a geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Wash., after scientists reported the reduced seismic activity.
