Irvine Explains Ballot Error to Voters

Irvine officials announced Tuesday that they had mailed postcards to 87,000 registered voters explaining a mistake in printed ballot instructions for the Nov. 2 City Council election.

In addition, City Clerk Jeri L. Stately said, Irvine’s estimated 24,000 absentee voters will receive supplemental ballots this week, which will have to be returned in a separate envelope from the first ballot.

The problem began last week when city officials noticed that ballot instructions erroneously directed voters to select a maximum of two candidates for City Council instead of three.

An Orange County Superior Court judge last week instructed the city and the county registrar of voters to correct the error.

Electronic ballot machines are being reprogrammed to reflect the correct instructions, Stately said.

Absentee voters, however, must send in the supplemental ballots -- recording their selections for City Council -- as well as the original absentee ballots from which their votes for mayor will be counted.

“They have to come back in two separate envelopes,” Stately said. “That’s really important.”

The ballots must arrive at the registrar’s office by 8 p.m. on election day, she said.
