A High Five for Culpepper

Daunte Culpepper lost his top receiver but did not miss a step in setting an NFL record.

Culpepper threw five touchdown passes to lead the Minnesota Vikings to a 38-31 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night at the Superdome. He did it without having Randy Moss for the second half.

It was the third time this season Culpepper threw five touchdown passes in a game, an NFL record.

Culpepper, despite pressure from the Saint defense, completed 26 of 37 passes for 425 yards. He had two passes intercepted and was sacked twice.

The Vikings had 605 yards of offense.

Rookie running back Mewelde Moore had another big game for Minnesota, rushing for 109 yards and catching seven passes for 78 yards.

Moss, who leads the NFL in touchdown catches, injured his hamstring in the second quarter. He had two receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown. It was the 10th consecutive game in which Moss had a touchdown reception.

Nate Burleson had six receptions for 134 yards for Minnesota (4-1).

Saint quarterback Aaron Brooks completed 22 of 38 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown. Deuce McAllister ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns in 18 carries for New Orleans (2-4).

Green Bay 38, Detroit 10 -- Maybe getting away from Lambeau Field was just what the Packers needed.

Brett Favre threw two touchdown passes, moved up among career passing leaders and led the Packers to a win over the Lions at Detroit.

Green Bay (2-4) had lost four straight for the first time in 13 years and is 0-3 at home for the first time since 1988.

In an odd twist, Detroit (3-2) has won both its road games -- after losing an NFL-record 24 straight -- but fell to 1-2 at home.

The game was close until Darren Sharper intercepted a pass early in the third quarter and returned it 36 yards -- with a juke move and a hurdle into the end zone -- to give the Packers a 24-10 lead.

Favre, who talked about retirement with his young daughter this week, was effective despite not having receiver Robert Ferguson for the whole game and Javon Walker for much of it. Donald Driver made up for the losses with nine receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Favre completed 25 of 38 passes for 257 yards. He extended his streak with a touchdown pass to 31 games, passing Dan Marino and trailing only Johnny Unitas’ record run of 47 in a row. Favre played in his 197th game with the Packers, passing Bart Starr for No. 1 in franchise history.

With 165 yards passing in the first half, Favre surpassed Fran Tarkenton for fourth place on the NFL career list with 47,106.

Washington 13, Chicago 10 -- Clinton Portis had his best day since changing teams and the Redskins throttled the Bears’ inept offense at Chicago.

Ending a four-game losing streak, Washington (2-4) sacked struggling Chicago quarterback Jonathan Quinn three times in the final three minutes before Sean Taylor’s closing-seconds interception sealed the victory.

In a matchup of misfiring quarterbacks, Washington’s Mark Brunell and Quinn had trouble connecting with their receivers in an ugly game at Soldier Field. Portis carried 36 times for 171 yards, offsetting Brunell’s eight-for-22 performance for 95 yards.

Quinn, once a backup to Brunell at Jacksonville, was just as inaccurate. In his fifth NFL start and second since replacing injured Rex Grossman, Quinn completed 10 of 22 passes for only 65 yards. The Bears (1-4) managed only 160 yards in total offense and crossed midfield three times.
