Lewis Shoots 62, Leads by Two

J.L. Lewis shot a 10-under-par 62 for a two-shot lead Thursday in the Funai Classic at Disney in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Two-time Disney champion John Huston, Mark Hensby and Scott Hend were tied for second with 64s, and two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal was among three at 65. Vijay Singh had a 66.

Tom Kite shot an eight-under 64, one stroke ahead of Dana Quigley for the first-round lead at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Sonoma. Hale Irwin is in third place after shooting a 66.

LPGA Tour rookie Isabelle Beisiegel shot her second consecutive 80 in the third round of a PGA Tour qualifying tournament at La Quinta, effectively ending her chance, for now, of becoming the first woman to qualify for the men’s tour.

Tennis

Andre Agassi defeated Vince Spadea, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters in Spain. Agassi will meet Tommy Robredo, a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner over Fernando Verdasco.

Venus Williams defeated 16-year-old qualifier Ana Ivanovic, 7-6 (11), 7-6 (6), to advance to the quarterfinals of the Swisscom Challenge at Zurich, Switzerland. She will play Maria Sharapova today.

Andy Roddick has withdrawn from next week’s Stockholm Open because of a knee injury. The injury kept him from competing this week in Madrid.

Pro Basketball

Jermaine O’Neal probably will sit out the remaining exhibition games to rest a strained ligament in his left foot, Indiana Coach Rick Carlisle said.

Alonzo Mourning, 34, went through his first full-contact practice with New Jersey since undergoing a kidney transplant surgery 10 months ago. The Nets also announced that Rod Thorn signed a five-year contract extension to remain president of the team.

Guard Corey Benjamin, a former standout at Fontana High and first-round pick of Chicago in 1998, was released by Charlotte.

Miscellany

Boxer James Butler was arrested by Los Angeles police from the Hollywood division and booked on suspicion of first-degree murder of Sam Kellerman, 29, the younger brother of sports television personality Max Kellerman. Butler, 31, is being held without bail.

The NHL Players’ Assn. will assemble the player representatives from the league’s 30 teams for a Nov. 2 meeting in Toronto to update them on the lockout, which began Sept. 16.

UCLA forward Dijon Thompson needed four stitches to close a cut on his hand between his index and middle fingers. The Bruins had Thursday off and Thompson is expected to practice today. Officials did not say how Thompson suffered the cut.

As expected, Val Ackerman, 44, resigned after eight years as WNBA president.

Viatcheslav Ekimov, who finished second to American cyclist Tyler Hamilton in the Aug. 18 time trial at the Athens Olympics, filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to disqualify Hamilton for blood doping.

England captain David Beckham won’t be charged over his admission that he deliberately earned a yellow card in a match against Wales two weeks ago after the Football Assn. ruled there was insufficient evidence.
