A fuzzy blue monster’s 35-year career retrospective

What better time than Labor Day to celebrate the hardest-working Muppet on “Sesame Street”: little Grover, the furry blue (“and I’m cute too”) monster.

After all, his epic, 35-year job history includes stints as a waiter, disco dancer, elevator operator, firefighter, plumber, wig salesman, cowboy, taxi driver, telegram messenger, dog sledder and hot dog vendor.

Not to mention his memorable gig as well-meaning superhero Super Grover, whose good deeds (and hard landings) have become the rubble, er, stuff of legend.

A retrospective of this rather checkered resume -- and a tribute to one of the most lovable Muppets on the iconic educational show -- can be found in a new, deliciously comic direct-to-DVD/video release, “A Celebration of Me, Grover” (Sesame Street/Sony Wonder; DVD: $12.98, VHS: $9.98).

Hosted by Big Bird, it’s presented as a “Flyers Club Roost,” a testimonial dinner attended by other feathered fliers and Grover pals Elmo, Bert and Ernie, Oscar and Zoe. (A complementary CD with the same title, featuring 12 of Grover’s signature songs, is also available.)

Highlights: Grover snuggling with Lena Horne and getting hugs from enchanted preschoolers; a breathless Grover gasping through an overly prolonged demonstration of “around, over, under, through, near and far”; “Saturday Night Fever” Grover at the alphabet disco; and the guinea pig payoff to wig salesman Grover’s session with customer Mr. Blue, his long-suffering foil on the show.

Laugh-out-loud funny and frequently touching too, the clips and the well-written “roost” not only do justice to a beloved Muppet character but also serve as a reminder that creativity, wit and heart remain a “Sesame Street” hallmark.
