The Miami Dolphins’ opening game against the Tennessee Titans will be played Saturday instead of Sunday because of approaching Hurricane Ivan.

Ivan could reach South Florida as soon as Sunday, forecasters said. The Dolphins and Titans had been scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. EDT that day.

“Our first question was how we could make this safe for everyone,” Dolphin President Eddie Jones said Thursday. “Our first concern is for families of our players and staff and, of course, being in Miami, for our fans.”

The change was made to allow Miami residents and officials more time to prepare for Ivan, which has top sustained winds of 160 mph. At midday Thursday, it was about 900 miles southeast of Miami. It could hit Florida by Sunday, forecasters said.

“It’s pretty wild,” said linebacker Junior Seau, a California native.

“Where I come from, we have earthquakes. It just happens. Here, you can monitor hurricanes for days and days and your life stops.

“With the weather we have, it can scare a lot of our fan support away and that’s understandable.”

San Diego Charger wide receiver Tim Dwight sat out his second straight practice because of a hamstring injury and probably will sit out the season opener at Houston on Sunday.... A day after the St. Louis Rams’ signing of Jason Sehorn fell through, the team re-signed a safety they released only four days earlier. The Rams signed Justin Lucas and put safety Zack Bronson on injured reserve because of an injured left ankle.... The Cincinnati Bengals released offensive lineman Victor Leyva and replaced him on the roster with offensive lineman Alex Sulfsted.
