More than 10,000 volunteers picked up trash along 53 beaches and waterways in Los Angeles County on Saturday as part of International Coastal Cleanup day.

About 70,000 pounds of trash and 5,000 pounds of recyclables were picked up around the county in places such as Santa Monica Beach and Compton Creek, said Hallie Jones, spokeswoman for Heal the Bay, a nonprofit group that organized the 20th annual coastal cleanup.

One of the most popular sites was Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey, which drew about 1,000 volunteers, including Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn, Jones said.

The event was observed in all 50 states and in 90 countries, according to Jones.
