San Francisco Giant pitcher Dustin Hermanson was suspended for three games for intentionally hitting Jeff Kent of the Houston Astros with a pitch in a game last week.

Hermanson also was fined an undisclosed amount, it was announced Tuesday. Hermanson, the Giants’ closer, has appealed, and the suspension will remain on hold until the process is completed.

Hermanson hit former Giant second baseman Kent with a pitch after warnings were issued during the game at San Francisco on Thursday.

Pitchers Pedro Astacio of Boston and Brad Halsey of the New York Yankees were suspended Tuesday for three games and fined undisclosed amounts for intentionally throwing at batters.

Astacio and Halsey appealed, so they remain eligible to pitch until their hearings. Even if his suspension is upheld, Halsey doesn’t expect it to take effect until next season.

In the top of the eighth inning Sunday, Astacio was tossed for throwing behind Kenny Lofton, and both teams were warned.

In the bottom of the inning, Halsey and Yankee Manager Joe Torre were ejected after the reliever threw a pitch high and tight to Dave Roberts.

The benches and bullpens cleared, but players were kept apart and no punches were thrown.
