Daniel Cohen, 90; Helped Found Renters’ Rights Group

Daniel Cohen, 90, a progressive Santa Monica political activist who devoted much of his life to fighting for union workers, tenants and seniors, died March 25 of natural causes in a West Los Angeles hospital.
An electrician by trade, Cohen served as president of Santa Monica’s Democratic Club in the 1970s and helped lead the renters’ rights movement.
He was also a founding member of the politically powerful Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights.
Cohen, who was born in Trenton, N.J., was one of the original organizers of the West Side Center for Healthy Aging and served on the Los Angeles County Commission on Aging, the California Senior Legislature and the Commission on Older Americans in Santa Monica.
