Boston Red Sox Manager Terry Francona was released Friday from Massachusetts General Hospital, two days after experiencing chest pains that doctors said were probably caused by a virus.

Francona initially had been hospitalized in New York on Wednesday before the Red Sox played the Yankees. He was transferred to Boston for more testing. Team physician Thomas Gill said Friday that tests showed no evidence of a serious heart problem, that Francona’s chest pains probably were caused by a “recent viral illness” and that the manager should be ready to return to the bench Monday for the team’s home opener.

The Red Sox are scheduled to receive their World Series rings Monday before their game against the Yankees. Bench coach Brad Mills will continue to serve as manager this weekend at Toronto.

Mills said Francona was eager to return. “He was very much relieved that the blockage is not what they had feared,” Mills said.
