Jazz series ends on cool notes

Share

The Jazz @ USC series ends with a bang over three nights, with singer Claudia Acuna and the Lincoln Center-based Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, legendary 84-year-old pianist-composer Dave Brubeck and USC’s Thornton Jazz Orchestra with guest singers Jamie Davis and Carmen Bradford.

Brubeck, who has been recording since the 1940s, is the elder statesman on the bill, but there are some fine newcomers. Acuna, who moved to New York from her native Chile in 1995, has recorded three critically acclaimed albums since 2000. The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, founded in 2002 and consisting of 18 prominent soloists from New York City’s Latin jazz scene, is led by pianist Arturo O’Farrill, son of the late great Chico O’Farrill. And the USC Thornton Jazz Orchestra features the jazz program’s best students, led by pianist-composer-arranger Shelly Berg.

Claudia Acuna and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, 7 p.m. today. USC Bovard Auditorium, University Park campus, L.A. $5 to $20. (213) 740-2167.
