Real Salt Lake Wins Home Opener

Brian Dunseth scored in the 81st minute and Real Salt Lake got its first Major League Soccer victory in its home debut, beating the Colorado Rapids, 1-0, Saturday.

Clint Mathis had an assist and a strong defensive play at the end and goalkeeper D.J. Countess got his second shutout of the season for the expansion club.

Real officials were hoping for 25,000 fans in the inaugural game and got 25,287 clad in Salt Lake’s colors of red, blue and gold in the lower stands at Rice-Eccles Stadium. They had something to celebrate with Dunseth’s header off a 30-yard pass from Mathis.

Chicago 2, San Jose 1 -- Thiago scored in the first minute of injury time at Chicago, leading the Fire over the Earthquakes.

Chad Barrett sent a pass in front of the net to Thiago, who scored to the left of goalie Pat Onstad.

MetroStars 2, Kansas City 2 -- Sergio Galvan Rey scored his second goal of the game in the 60th minute as the MetroStars rallied for the tie at East Rutherford, N.J.

Jack Jewsbury gave the Wizards the early lead when he scored off a deflection in the 20th minute.
