Foes of March Base Cargo Plans Give Up
The main opponents of an around-the-clock commercial cargo port at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County announced Wednesday that a lawsuit challenging the project had been settled.
The two sides agreed to pay their own attorney fees.
A judge had ruled against the groups’ environmental challenges on March 22, and they said they could not afford to carry on with the other claims.
“It was kind of a David and Goliath situation,” said Catherine Barrett-Fisher, leader of one of the two neighborhood environmental groups that had sued.
The groups had alleged that the March Joint Powers Authority did not conduct proper environmental studies of noise and air pollution impacts, ignored possible contamination of nearby drinking water supplies and broke a promise to abide by a nighttime curfew on flights. The authority had denied all of the allegations.
