Authorities Investigating 3 Recent Freeway Shootings

Authorities are investigating three freeway shootings that occurred since Friday, the latest in a string of about two dozen such attacks in Southern California this year.

It was unclear whether they were related to each other or to the previous shootings, which left four people dead, officials said Monday.

About 10:45 p.m. Sunday, a passenger in a dark blue sedan fired a shot with a handgun at a plumbing van headed south on the Harbor Freeway, near the 105 Freeway.

The bullet pierced the van’s roof but missed the driver. “There is absolutely no information on a possible motive,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Ron Burch.

There is also no evidence to indicate the attack was related to the other shootings, Burch said. But, he added, “this is a fairly fresh case, so things like that are still being looked into.”

Los Angeles Police Department detectives and the Highway Patrol were also investigating two shooting incidents a few hours apart Friday on the 405 Freeway.

About 8:50 a.m., someone in a dark-colored vehicle, possibly using a pellet gun, fired at a Chevrolet SUV near Sherman Way in Van Nuys, shattering the windshield. Officials said the attack appeared to be unprovoked.

Five hours earlier, on the 405 Freeway between Devonshire Street and Roscoe Boulevard in North Hills, three vehicles were struck by pellet-gun fire, authorities said.

The Highway Patrol formed a task force in May to look for possible links between the string of shootings in four counties. However, law enforcement officials have said the number of shootings is about the same as last year, and that nothing seems to connect the cases.

On July 22, authorities made their first arrest. D’andre Keyshaun Moorer, 27, of Los Angeles was charged in the March 29 killing of 20-year-old college student Michael Livingston on the 110 Freeway. The motive appeared to be “road rage,” police said.
