Phillies Get Past Padres

Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer and Jon Lieber pitched six strong innings, leading the Philadelphia Phillies over the San Diego Padres, 3-2, Friday night at San Diego.

Burrell staked Lieber to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when he lined a 96-mph fastball from Jake Peavy into the left-field seats.

Lieber (11-10) and three relievers made it stand up as Philadelphia won for the fourth time in six games. Lieber limited the Padres to two runs and six hits.

Peavy (10-5) settled down after he threw 31 pitches in the first inning. He shut out the Phillies through the seventh, giving up three more hits.

San Francisco 1, Florida 0 -- Noah Lowry (8-11) limited the Marlins to four hits in 7 1/3 innings, and Randy Winn homered in the sixth at Miami. The Giants were held to five hits in eight innings by Dontrelle Willis (15-8), who failed to tie St. Louis’ Chris Carpenter for the major league lead in victories.

Arizona 8, Atlanta 0 -- Tony Clark drove in four runs with two homers, and Claudio Vargas (6-6) gave up two hits in seven innings at Atlanta. Clark hit two-run homers in the first and third innings.

Chicago 4, St. Louis 1 -- Carlos Zambrano (9-5) yielded six hits in six shutout innings at Wrigley Field. Jason Marquis (9-11), who has lost five starts in a row and has one win since June 10, gave up 10 hits and three runs in seven innings.

Washington 4, Colorado 2 -- Esteban Loaiza (7-8) pitched into the seventh inning at Coors Field for his first win since July 16 against Milwaukee. He yielded a run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. Chad Cordero worked a perfect ninth for his major league-leading 38th save in 42 chances.

Houston 6, Pittsburgh 5 -- Morgan Ensberg hit a tying home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Adam Everett scored three batters later on Rob Mackowiak’s throwing error.

Cincinnati 5, Milwaukee 3 -- Luke Hudson (4-5) improved to 3-0 in four starts against the Brewers by giving up three runs and five hits in six innings at Milwaukee.
