Podsednik on Disabled List

The Chicago White Sox put outfielder Scott Podsednik on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of a strained muscle in his left leg. The move was retroactive to Saturday.

Podsednik, who leads the major leagues with 54 stolen bases, has been bothered by the injury for three weeks and has been caught stealing nine times in his last 13 attempts.

To take his spot, the team purchased the contract of outfielder Brian Anderson from triple-A Charlotte.

San Francisco closer Armando Benitez was activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing 96 games because of a right hamstring injury. Benitez had surgery May 3 to reattach two tendons to his pelvis.

San Diego Padre shortstop Khalil Greene was put on the 15-day disabled list after breaking his left big toe Sunday during a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. He’s expected to miss two to three weeks.

Rafael Palmeiro says he believes he “soon” will be able to explain himself and tell people why he tested positive for steroids. “My day will come when I can say what happened. As of right now, I can’t say anything. Hopefully soon,” he said.

The 40-year-old Palmeiro, suspended by Major League Baseball on Aug. 1, claims he didn’t know how the drug got in his body. He has not addressed the topic since being activated Thursday, saying that his attorneys advised him to hold off from commenting until Congress concludes its investigation of his case.

Met center fielder Carlos Beltran had tests at a hospital in New York and is deciding whether to have surgery to repair a facial fracture. The tests also showed Beltran has a concussion. An MRI exam of his brain was normal. Beltran is day to day, but if he opts for surgery he probably will go on the 15-day disabled list.
