Hawkins Sparks Long Beach State

Too bad Long Beach State doesn’t play all of its games at home.

A 93-85 victory over Loyola Marymount on Wednesday night was the eighth consecutive win for the 49ers in the Walter Pyramid over the last two seasons.

Shawn Hawkins had 19 points for Long Beach State (2-2), which takes a two-game winning streak into games at Portland and Sacramento State.

Matthew Knight had 32 points and 18 rebounds for the Lions (1-4), who dropped their fourth game in a row.

The Lions appeared flustered at times by the aggressive 49ers in the first half. Long Beach State had 10 steals and forced 12 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, when the Lions shot 36.1% from the field.

The 49ers repeatedly drove to the basket and drew enough fouls to shoot 15 free throws. Loyola Marymount shot five.

But the 49ers led only 41-31 at the half after shooting 41.9% from the field. And they committed 13 turnovers, partly because they tried to play at a frantic tempo.

In the second half, the 49ers kept up their defensive pressure but got a little more under control while the Lions continued to misfire.

Loyola Marymount made only 32 of 80 shots (40%) and Long Beach State made 26 of 53 shots (49.1%). The 49ers made 33 of 48 free throws.

Long Beach State took its biggest lead, 61-42, with 12 minutes 1 second to play on a layup by Mark Dawson.

No. 17 Kansas State 84, Cal State Fullerton 59 -- Lance Harris scored 19 points and Cartier Martin had 17 to lead the Wildcats (4-0) at at Manhattan, Kan.

Vershan Cottrell had a career-high 15 points to lead the Titans (3-1). Bobby Brown had 14 points and five assists, but was only six for 21 from the field and two for 10 from beyond the three-point arc.
