One Shoots for the Moon

One of the mantras of the BCS apologists is, “We must save the bowl system.” Well if UCLA should upset USC, the Bruins will end up 10-1, having beaten the country’s No. 1 team and ending the Trojans’ 33-game winning streak, and their reward will be ... the Sun Bowl.

This is a system that cries for destruction.

I thought J.A. Adande’s “33” article [Nov. 29] was interesting. If you have ever heard the urban legend behind the Rolling Rock “33” [supposedly representing 1933, the year Prohibition was repealed], you will understand why I made it the official beer for UCLA’s upset. Coincidentally, I believe the other Karim Abdul-Jabbar (former UCLA alum Sharmon Shah) also wore the number 33 while in Miami. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar + Karim Abdul-Jabbar = 33 letters.

I’m trying to talk my buddy Sanders into drinking 33 Rolling Rocks from now until kickoff. He may be our only hope.

Four reasons why USC will trounce UCLA this afternoon:

1. They are a better team on both sides of the ball, especially their offense. (See NFL scouting reports and All-Pac-10 team for further verification.)

2. Those ultimate gurus, the oddsmakers, have established SC as a 21-point favorite. Must mean something, mustn’t it?

3. UCLA, which easily could be 5-5 instead of 9-1, has proved it can be had. (52-14? I doubt there’s a pro team that could hold USC to 14 points.)

4. And finally, the Trojans are playing in their house! Nobody can beat SC at the Coliseum.

Fight on, Trojans. Dream on, Bruins.

As a Bruin fan, it pains me to admit that on the occasions that USC trailed its opponents this year I unexpectedly had a sinking feeling. As usual, I wanted them to lose, but this was different. Watching Fresno State, Arizona State and Notre Dame take leads just didn’t feel right.

That feeling was unexplainable to me until this week. Now it is clear: This streak is UCLA’s to break and if anyone else did it, Bruin fans would have been cheated.

Dear SC Sam,

Just what was the point to the Sunday article comparing the Bruin and Trojan players bound for the NFL? That USC is a football factory and couldn’t care less what a “student-athlete” is?

Please, I pay for the newspaper subscription. If I wanted a copy of the Daily Trojan, I’m sure I can get that through USC.
