Lemieux Is Discharged

Pittsburgh Penguin owner-captain Mario Lemieux was discharged from a hospital Thursday after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat that can be treated with medication and should not affect his career.

Lemieux, 40, was admitted to a Pittsburgh hospital after practice Wednesday.

After being evaluated overnight, doctors diagnosed the problem and told Lemieux he should rest and go on medication. He is expected to take it easy for a week to 10 days, after which the team will determine when he can resume play.

Thursday night at Pittsburgh, his team lost to Minnesota, 5-0. The Wild’s Marian Gaborik stole the puck from Pittsburgh forward Shane Endicott and scored barely a minute into the game, setting the tone. It was the Penguins’ sixth consecutive loss.

Edmonton 3, Philadelphia 2 -- Ethan Moreau scored two short-handed goals at Philadelphia for the Oilers, who won for the fifth time in seven games.

Branko Radivojevic and Sami Kapanen had goals for the Flyers.

Tampa Bay 5, St. Louis 4 -- Goaltender John Grahame tied a Lightning record with his eighth consecutive victory and Martin St. Louis scored a tiebreaking goal with 6:30 left in the third period at Tampa, Fla.

Mike Sillinger and Keith Tkachuk each had two goals and an assist for the Blues, who have lost five of six.

Columbus 4, New York Islanders 3 -- David Vyborny used a wrist shot to score the only goal in a shootout for the Blue Jackets at Columbus, Ohio.

The Islanders’ Mark Parrish scored the tying goal with 37 seconds left in regulation.

Sergei Fedorov scored his first goal with the Blue Jackets.

New York Rangers 5, Nashville 1 -- Petr Prucha and Steve Rucchin each scored two goals for the Rangers at Nashville, Tenn. Nashville lost starting goalie Tomas Vokoun to a knee injury.

San Jose 6, Florida 2 -- Patrick Marleau had his fourth straight three-point game for the Sharks at home. The Panthers were on the second of back-to-back road games.
