Iowa State Is Too Tough for Iowa

Curtis Stinson scored 20 points, Rahshon Clark had 17 and Jiri Hubalek finished with 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Iowa State to a 72-60 victory over No. 12 Iowa Friday night at Ames, the Hawkeyes’ second loss to an unranked in-state rival in four days.

Iowa (7-3), playing without injured point guard Jeff Horner, lost to Iowa State (6-2) for the third time in four games. The Cyclones forced the Hawkeyes into 20 turnovers, including five by Horner’s replacement, Tony Freeman.

On Tuesday, the Hawkeyes lost, 67-63, in overtime at Northern Iowa.

The Cyclones forced four turnovers in the first 3:23 of the second half. Stinson and Rahshon Clark made three-point baskets to cap a 13-6 run early in the second half that gave Iowa State a 48-36 lead.

No. 10 Florida 88, Bethune-Cookman 58 -- The Gators shot an O’Connell Center-record 67.3% in the victory over the visiting Wildcats (3-5). Florida, unranked at the start of the season, is 9-0 for the second time in team history. If Florida beats Jacksonville at home on Dec. 18, it will match the best start in school history set in 1951-52.

OTHER GAMES

St. Peter’s 69, Canisius 64 -- Keydren Clark, who was averaging 20.7 points, was held to 13 but made two free throws with 27 seconds left at Buffalo, N.Y., to clinch the victory in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for the Peacocks (3-4) at Buffalo, N.Y. The Golden Griffins are 0-5 for the first time since the 1987-88 season.

Clemson 80, East Tennessee State 72 -- Tim Smith scored a game-high 33 points for the Buccaneers (1-5) at Clemson, S.C., but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Tigers from starting 8-0 for the 11th time in team history.

WOMEN

No. 6 Rutgers 77, Old Dominion 41 -- The Scarlet Knights (7-0) held the Monarchs (1-4) to two baskets in the last 14 minutes of the first half at Piscataway, N.J. Cappie Pondexter matched her season high with 26 points for Rutgers.
