NBC is game for more ‘Deal’

VIEWERS resoundingly said yes to “Deal or No Deal,” with three episodes cracking last week’s Top 10, according to Nielsen Media Research figures released Wednesday, prompting NBC to order additional episodes.

The five episodes of the game show on which contestants choose a briefcase with a dollar figure inside, then have to decide whether to accept an offer from an unseen “banker,” averaged 12.7 million viewers.

By comparison, the first five episodes of ABC’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” which ushered in a short-lived era of prime-time game shows, averaged 11.5 million viewers in August 1999, when television viewership was lower.

All but the Dec. 20 episode recorded season-high viewership in the time period for NBC. The five episodes all won their time slots and exceeded NBC’s viewership in the time slots by an average of 51% and 54% among viewers ages 18 to 49, the group targeted by NBC, ABC and Fox Broadcasting.

NBC has ordered additional episodes, which are expected to begin airing in March, a network official said.

“Any time a show achieves good ratings, it’s a bit of a surprise, especially in today’s market, where hits have become particularly elusive,” said David Goldberg, president of Endemol USA, which produces “Deal or No Deal.”

“We certainly believed in the show and were confident based on ‘Deal or No Deal’s’ broad international success. However, that doesn’t automatically guarantee success, as we’ve seen many times before.”

In a week with little original scripted programming, CBS had the five most-watched shows from Dec. 19 through Sunday, to easily extend its streak of being the most-watched network for each week of the season to 14, the first network to do so since NBC in 1988.

CBS averaged 10 million viewers, followed by NBC with 7.7 million, ABC with 7.3 million, Fox with 6.8 million, UPN with 2.9 million and the WB with 2 million.

ABC was handicapped because Sunday, its most-viewed night, was Christmas, a day with traditionally low viewership, and its three serial drama hits -- “Desperate Housewives,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Lost,” which fare poorly in reruns -- were all in reruns last week.

However, ABC did benefit from the two-hour special “Barbara Walters Presents: Heaven. Where Is It? How Do We Get There?” It was Dec. 20’s most-watched program and seventh for the week with 13.8 million viewers.

With CBS showing a rerun of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” a first-run episode of its spinoff “CSI: Miami” was the week’s most-watched show, attracting a season-high 20.3 million viewers. “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” has been the most-watched show for 11 of the season’s 14 weeks, finishing second each of the other three weeks, twice with reruns.

CBS also had the most-watched first-year series, the comedy “Out of Practice,” which finished fourth overall with a series-high 15 million viewers. “Out of Practice” retained 85% of the audience of its lead-in, “Two and a Half Men,” which finished third with a season-high 17.7 million viewers.
