Wireless campgrounds

Campers can check e-mail and surf the Web via wireless Internet connections at 85 California state parks beginning in May under an agreement between SBC Communications and the state.

San Elijo State Beach in San Diego will be the first in the 278-park system to offer the service, called “WiFi” or “wireless fidelity,” officials said last week.

Subscribers to SBC’s DSL service can pay an extra $1.95 per month for campground Internet use; others will be charged $7.95 per day or $19.95 per month. All park visitors will have free online access to CalTrans for road conditions, websites for other state campgrounds and ReserveAmerica, which manages campground reservations.
