Huskies Too Tough for Cougars, 68-55

Washington continued its domination of cross-state rival Washington State by defeating the Cougars, 68-55, Saturday night at Pullman.

The No. 15 Huskies beat the Cougars for the fourth game in a row and 14th time in 18 games.

Tre Simmons scored 16 points, Mike Jensen had 13 points and Brandon Roy 11 for the Huskies, 21-4 overall and 11-3 in the Pacific 10, who are a game behind first-place Arizona.

Simmons, who leads Washington with 16.1 points a game, had only five points before scoring 11 on four long jump shots on four consecutive possessions late in the game.

Freshman Kyle Weaver led Washington State (10-13, 5-9) with a season-high 15 points.

Washington led, 34-17, at the half after holding the Cougars to 35% shooting and forcing 12 turnovers. The Cougars finished with a season-high 22 turnovers and shot 45%.

The score was tied 9-9 after four minutes, but the Huskies outscored the Cougars, 15-2, over the next seven minutes. The Huskies led by 11 or more points the rest of the game. The Cougars scored the final 13 points against Washington reserves.

Arizona State 66, Oregon 56 -- Steve Moore scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half at Tempe, Ariz., sparking a rally from a 13-point deficit, and the Sun Devils (18-9, 7-8) virtually secured a berth in the conference tournament.

Ike Diogu was nine for 15 from the field and Moore nine for 16, helping the Sun Devils overcome their 38% shooting from the field.

Diogu had 23 points, but missed six free throws two nights after missing a career-worst seven in a 75-73 victory over Oregon State.

Malik Hairston had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Ducks (12-11, 4-10).
