UCLA began spring practice, the first for second-year freshman quarterback Ben Olson, who split time with senior David Koral and redshirt freshman Patrick Cowan.

“We were in shorts and did not have an opportunity to have much contact ... but the team spirit is really high and we got in some good work today,” said Coach Karl Dorrell, whose Bruins will be without five starters for most of spring because of injury, including quarterback Drew Olson and linebackers Spencer Havner and Justin London.

Washington Coach Tyrone Willingham completed his coaching staff, hiring former Oklahoma State coach Bob Simmons as special teams coordinator.
