A Navy chief petty officer has been arrested on suspicion of killing his wife, whose body was identified Monday after being found in Devore with extensive head injuries, authorities said.

Philip C. Rivers, 45, of Temecula had been arrested Jan. 1 after his wife, Edna T. Rivers, 49, accused him of spousal abuse. He was freed on bail. He reported his wife missing Wednesday.

Detectives found Edna Rivers’ car at the Pechanga Resort & Casino parking lot Wednesday and evidence of a struggle inside the Rivers’ home -- including shampooed carpet and freshly painted walls that failed to conceal a bloody crime scene, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
