A 6-year-old girl standing outside Lanai Road Elementary School was hit Thursday by a van equipped for a disabled driver.
The driver, who was not identified, lost control of the vehicle at 2:55 p.m. while backing up in a parking lot on Lanai Road. Police said the van’s brake and accelerator were manually controlled.
“It looks like it was a tragic accident,” said Officer Jason Lee of the Los Angeles Police Department.
The child was declared dead at Tarzana Regional Medical Center about 20 minutes later.
