Rescuing L.A.’s icons
How disingenuous that there are those in L.A. who think that the strongest defenders of historic preservation are “wealthy dilettantes who don’t live in the immediate area” (“The Equivocal City,” Jan. 9).
If it weren’t for this core group of triflers, L.A. would have been reduced to a city of strip malls. Thanks to the likes of the Los Angeles Conservancy, scores of architecturally significant buildings have been saved from the wrecker’s ball. Too bad the Conservancy wasn’t around to stave off demolition of the magnificent Richfield Oil Building. Here’s hoping they have better luck with the Ambassador.
