Two people on a nighttime stroll died early Thursday when they plunged 150 feet off a cliff and into a pool of water in the Angeles National Forest, authorities said.

The victims died at the scene, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Roxanna Hart said.

The county coroner’s office identified them as Raul Urrutia, 22, of Temple City and Natalie Torres, 17, of Baldwin Park.

The two and another couple had driven up to a turnout on San Gabriel Canyon Road north of Morris Reservoir above Glendora. Urrutia and Torres strolled off about 1:30 a.m., Hart said.

The two “apparently didn’t realize how close they were to the edge” and tumbled, Hart said.

The man plunged all the way, but the girl managed to break her fall, the lieutenant said.

“The two who were by the vehicle ... were able to rescue her and brought her up to the top,” Hart said.

The two then scrambled back down to find their missing friend.

“The young lady that they had rescued came back down also, and that’s when she fell to her death,” Hart said.
