Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who wants to pare down the $11-billion plan to modernize Los Angeles International Airport, is taking steps to put his own nominees on the Airport Commission.

Five of the seven commissioners received calls this week thanking them for their service, the mayor’s office said Tuesday, an indication that he will overhaul the body that oversees the city’s airports.

One commissioner, whose term expired June 30, did not receive a call. The commission has one vacancy.

Villaraigosa’s representatives said “the mayor would be selecting an Airport Commission and they wanted to put me on notice,” said Jerome Stanley, who was appointed in 2004 by former Mayor James K. Hahn. “But they requested that we stay on until they’re confirmed.”

The mayor plans to announce his appointees within the next few weeks, said spokeswoman Janelle Erickson. “He’s looking forward to getting a fresh start at the airport,” she said.
