A driver who barreled through a red light in Corona early Thursday killed one teenager and injured two others, police said.

Alan Brown, 43, of Corona was traveling at a “high rate of speed” down 6th Street when he ran the red light at Smith Avenue and broadsided the driver’s side of a car carrying three teenage boys, said Sgt. Jerry Rodriguez, spokesman for the Corona Police Department.

“It was a pretty significant impact,” he said, adding that the cars landed about one block away from each other. “One [car] basically blew up on impact.”

A back-seat passenger, 17, was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police didn’t know whether he had been wearing a seat belt.

The 16-year-old driver had to be extracted from the car, which was engulfed in flames when police arrived. Another 17-year-old passenger was able to get himself out of the car. Both were treated for minor injuries at Inland Valley Regional Medical Center in Wildomar, Rodriguez said.

Brown sustained moderate injuries and was being treated at Riverside Community Hospital.

An investigation into the crash is continuing.
