Been down the same road

The description of the havoc wrought by the “traffic-calming” measures in Cheviot Hills (July 20) struck a nerve in this resident of Santa Monica. Our town has for some years now employed every means known to man to impede driving in the city, blocking the passage of residents and nonresidents alike. It’s difficult to drive anywhere in Santa Monica without encountering curb-narrowings that hold up everybody if a driver ahead makes any kind of turn, speed bumps, traffic circles that back up cars for blocks and (the masterpiece) signals synchronized so that every light is red as one proceeds down the street. It is easy to imagine the fury of the Cheviot Hills residents: It is frustrating to have public money spent to make the streets hard to drive, when simply firing the traffic department and letting the roads rot would accomplish the same effect.
