Eaton, Padres Stop Cubs’ Winning Streak

Adam Eaton won his career-best seventh consecutive decision, hit his first triple and scored twice as the San Diego Padres ended the Chicago Cubs’ seven-game winning streak with a 6-2 victory.

The West Division-leading Padres rebounded after losing consecutive games at home for the first time this season. Chicago’s six-game road winning streak also ended.

Sergio Mitre (0-1), who went to San Diego City College a few blocks away from Petco Park, was chased in the fifth, when he gave up four runs.

Eaton (8-1) has seven wins and two no-decisions in his last nine starts. The right-hander, who yielded two runs and six hits in seven innings, hasn’t lost since April 16 at Dodger Stadium.

St. Louis 2, Houston 0 -- Chris Carpenter pitched eight strong innings, and Albert Pujols hit a solo home run -- his 13th homer -- in the ninth inning at Houston. The Astros have been shut out a major league-leading 10 times this season. Carpenter (8-3) yielded eight hits, struck out six and walked two for his fourth win in five starts.

Washington 3, Florida 2 -- Ryan Church drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly off John Riedling in the bottom of the 11th inning. The Nationals scored the winning run without a hit -- in fact, the Nationals didn’t have a hit after the fourth inning.

Pittsburgh 3, Atlanta 1 -- At Pittsburgh, Kip Wells (4-4) won for the first time since May 8. He gave up six hits and struck out seven in 7 2/3 scoreless innings, while allowing only one runner to reach third base. Wells rebounded from his worst start in three years on May 29, when he yielded nine runs -- four earned -- in 2 2/3 innings in an 11-2 loss at Cincinnati.

Colorado 12, Cincinnati 4 -- Preston Wilson hit two home runs and drove in three runs to help the Rockies rout the Reds at Coors Field. The Rockies took control with a six-run sixth to take a 10-2 lead.

Arizona at Philadelphia -- The game between the Diamondbacks and Phillies was postponed by rain and will be made up today as a part of a doubleheader. The game never got underway and was called after a two-hour delay.

San Francisco at New York -- The game between the Giants and the Mets was postponed because of a steady rain that began a few hours before the scheduled first pitch. It will be made up Sunday as part of a doubleheader.
